Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Metals

What types of precious metals are used in your wedding rings?

We use high-quality gold, platinum, and titanium in our wedding rings, each offering unique characteristics in terms of colour, durability, and feel. The gold alloys we use include 18ct and 9ct in yellow, white, and red variations, while our platinum is 95% pure (Platinum 950) for maximum strength and longevity. We also specialise in pure Ti2 Titanium, known for its lightweight and durable properties.

What do carat and fineness mean in gold jewellery?

Gold purity is measured in carats (ct), where 24ct is pure gold but too soft for most jewellery. The millennial system (parts per 1000) is also used in UK hallmarks, for example, 18ct (750) means 75% pure gold. 9ct (375) is 37.5% gold and a popular, affordable choice in the UK. Different alloys are added to gold to create variations in colour and strength.

What’s the difference between 18ct and 9ct gold?

18ct gold (750) contains more pure gold (75%) and offers superior durability, holding up well to everyday wear. It comes in deep yellow, greyish white, and strong red tones. 9ct gold (375) is a more affordable option with a slightly lighter colour, but it shows signs of wear and surface scratching sooner. White gold in both purities is typically rhodium-plated to enhance its bright appearance.

What makes platinum a great choice for wedding rings?

Platinum (950) is 95% pure platinum, making it one of the strongest and most durable precious metals. It has a naturally grey-white colour, is denser and heavier than gold, and resists corrosion, salt water, and chemicals. Its malleability makes it an excellent choice for diamond settings, and its wear characteristics ensure it lasts a lifetime with minimal maintenance.

Why do white gold rings need rhodium plating?

All white gold alloys have a slightly grey or brownish tint, so they are typically rhodium-plated to create a bright, reflective white finish. Over time, the rhodium layer can wear away (usually after 1–2 years), revealing the natural white gold beneath. Many people choose to have their rings re-plated periodically to maintain the bright white look.

Titanium

Why choose titanium for a wedding ring?

Titanium is an ultra-lightweight, high-strength metal that is incredibly comfortable to wear. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning it stays strong while feeling light on the finger. It’s also highly resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for long-term wear, even in harsh environments like seawater and chlorine.

What is Ti2 Titanium, and why do you use it?

We use only commercially pure titanium (99.2%), specifically Grade 2, which balances strength and workability. This allows us to create intricate, high-quality designs with a hands-on approach, rather than relying on machine-made parts. It’s durable yet workable, making it perfect for jewellery that’s both artistic and long-lasting.

Can titanium rings be coloured?

Yes! Titanium can take on a beautiful spectrum of colours through anodising, a process that alters the thickness of its natural oxide layer. This creates vibrant interference colours, similar to the effect seen in soap bubbles or oil on water. While the colour won’t fade, it can be susceptible to wear, so we design rings to protect the coloured areas as much as possible.

How does titanium compare to other metals in terms of durability?

Titanium is as strong as many steel alloys but much lighter, making it highly durable without being bulky. It is corrosion-resistant, meaning it won’t tarnish or degrade over time, unlike some lower-quality metals. Platinum is still the most resistant to everyday wear, but titanium offers a fantastic balance of strength, lightness, and affordability.
